Survival Awareness &
Active Shooter Preparedness

For Utilities

In 2021, the FBI designated 61 incidents in the United States as “active shooter” events. Scripps News documented 630 “mass shooting” (two or more victims) incidents during 2023. Critical incidents have touched every state and almost every county in the country over the past 20 years. It can happen here!

We hope you never have to ask:

“Did I do all I could to
protect our employees?”

Every business is different. Buildings are different. Staffing and access are different. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to Survivor Awareness and Active Shooter Preparedness.

Many of the off-the-shelf solutions available to businesses don’t take all of the variables into account. But we are different.

In partnership with retired FBI Special Agent and SWAT Team Leader Matthew Campbell, we are now leveraging his 25 years of experience to make a series of training opportunities and services available to utilities across the United States. Furthermore, this training is tailored for you and performed live, on-site, after a review of your business’s special circumstances.

Below are three ways we can help.

Survival Awareness Training

Survival Awareness training centers around Retired FBI Special Agent Matt Campbell’s extensive experience with critical incidents, such as active shooters, assaults, kidnapping, and information obtained from thousands of actual FBI cases. Under stress, people often make one crucial mistake, and that one mistake can lead them down the path of becoming a victim of violent crime. This training teaches people how to avoid making that one mistake by having a plan for their physical safety at work, a mall, a restaurant, or any public setting. The training delves into what bad guys seek in their victims and how not to be “that person.” Additionally, some of the training is about child safety and keeping our children safe in today's dangerous world. People leave this training feeling empowered by their new set of skills, which makes them confident they will make the right decisions for their safety and the safety of their families.

This education will prepare employees to:

  • increase situational awareness

  • anticipate problems

  • avoid patterns

  • train their minds

  • avoid being a target

  • know how to flee and how to fight if necessary

  • protect their children and loved ones

A very professional and timely presentation on situation awareness and safety given by a true patriot.

Active Shooter Preparedness Training

There are varied approaches to preparing for an active shooter. Still, the FBI’s proven “Run, Hide, Fight” education program, paired with a customized evaluation and planning for each specific facility, has proven to be the best program available to meet the special needs of businesses and industries. Retired FBI Special Agent Matthew Campbell (bio available here) provides unique insight and experience as he draws on his 25 years of experience dealing with active shooters and other critical incidents.

Many companies offer group training, but RWSmith ETC’s staff also provides one-on-one strategy sessions with your employees in their most common work areas. Employees are taught to be aware of their surroundings, to preplan escape routes, and to identify secure places to hide and lock down well before an incident occurs.

Let’s face it: you have invested heavily in your employees. Make one more small investment and have the peace of mind of knowing that you did all you could to protect your staff should the worst happen.

No other trainers have come in and spent time with our individual staff members to make sure that every employee has a plan in case the worst happens.”

De-Escalation

Each year, the number of threats to employees in the field and in the office increases. While very different from an active shooter situation, it is still imperative that your staff has the skills to defuse and de-escalate threatening situations quickly and safely.

This one-hour add-on class provides a list of tips and tricks to help reduce the intensity of a conflict or potentially violent situation. The session also covers what to do if confronted with a weapon in the field.

This education includes:

  • identifying real threats vs. people expressing their frustration

  • eleven tips to reduce anger in the workplace

  • strategies for safety in the field

  • tips for post-incident reporting

Roger and his team are professional and engaged. The training (Active Shooter Preparedness) exceeded our expectations, and we intend to have a refresher course in the future. I highly recommend this course to all offices who strive to keep the public and their employees safe.
